You might want to read the fine print very carefully on those "Private" deals.
They can be pierced. Threat of legal action can undue it. I have been helping a group find out who is behind some hit job websites. The fine print is most interesting. You still need a good case but if the site is actionable and you threaten legal action, then the registrar might give up the real owner's contact information.

Most registrars however do have a "Private" or "Locked" registration mode where they provide a proxy for you. Your name is not visible; only some form of key that the registrar uses to map to you internally. That is probably what you are looking for.

Can I register a domain name anonymously - ie not using my own real name?
This isn't for anything illegal, it's just for business reasons I don't want others to know that I'm associated with this (potential) website. And, no, it wouldn't work to have a family member, etc. do it.
