N Thompson and I were waiting for a friend on a street corner in Montreal during GP weekend a few years back. We saw a red BB pull up to the intersection...in fantastic shape. Nice 5 spoke Campy wheels, excellent paint, etc. There was something wrong, however. The occupants were very concerned with: 1) who was within sight of their BB 2) the sheen of their Tag Heuer F1s 3) the gain setting of their subwoofer 4) the trajectory of their frosted tips (haircut) As we approached, we then noticed the targa top and the very high transmission tunnel. It was a Fiero. But, boy, from about 30-40 ft away it looked great. The wheels were excellent repros with correct offset, width, etc. Also, the ride height and proportions were not bad either. It was well done and it will fool almost all but the most discerning enthusiast. My dad owns a terrible kit car that I've somehow managed to convince him to sell towards a real car. It's not a copy of anything...it was created as it's own make and model with a fairly original shape. My opinion is that, as long as the owner is not trying to pass it off as something genuine, then it is okay. If you're an NSYNC reject rollin' St Catherine's in Montreal looking for attention in your Pontiac 512BB, well, that's another story.
