Oh, and I almost forgot one of my other favorite Kit cars. Granted it is
not a replica of another car.

But, to get it in the States you have to assemble it you're self. That
makes it a kit.

Britt,

Very good points.

And I have also been in some kit cars that were just great cars!

Personally it comes down to the quality of the car in question and which car
did they copy. I have seen kit cars that you really just have to laugh at
and go on. I have seen kit cars that were nice, but just didn't suit my
personal taste. And I have seen kit cars that I really would love to have.
I personally think that the FactoryFive Cobras and Cobra Daytonas are just
the ticket.
http://www.factoryfive.com/
I want to buy and build one of these (someday when I actually have the
time). But, interestingly enough, I really don't like their GTM Supercar
(to me, it looks a bad copy of a 360).

I also think it is interesting that at the Mid America Shelby Meet (which is
always in Tulsa)
http://www.midamericafordmeet.com/
allows kit Cobras, kit Daytonas, and kit GT40s to be displayed right along
side of the originals. Well, maybe right along side of the originals isn't
the correct wording; they actually give the originals preferred placement.
But all of the Ford based kit cars are welcome to compete and show.

Same thing with motorcycles. I am a big V-Twin fan and have a thing for
choppers. I have been looking at Bigdogs http://www.bdm.com/
and I have been toying with the idea of building my own from scratch (once
again having that time problem). I have seen home built motorcycles that I
thought just sucked and I have seen some that would just make you drool.
And at motorcycle shows, it is the good home built ones that really draw the
crowds, not the off the shelf bikes. Motorcycles in general get cooler as
you customize them. And starting from scratch is just the Holy-Grail of
customizing.

So, here is a test for everyone here; Let's say that the Ferris Bueller's
Day Off 250 GT SWB CAL Spyder replica car (car is in fantastic condition) is
for sale on eBay with a buy it now price of?
Who on this list would buy it and have fun driving it for:
$100K
$50K
$25K
$15K
$10K
$5K
$2K
$1K
$500
So, now that we have established what we are, now we are just arguing over
the price.
:-)
And by the way, if you really want it, here it is.
http://www.kitcarmag.com/featuredvehicles/5531_ferrari_spyder_replica_kit/

So, like I said at the beginning of this, it depends on the car in question.
How good of a job was done creating it, how good of a car is it still, which
car did they copy, how good of a copy is it, and most importantly, is it a
car you would have fun driving?

I think this is a great topic.
When I was 15 I got a ride in a Kelmark that a boat owner had at a marina in

St Augustine Florida next to my dads boat. Got me hooked on cars, on Dinos,
and 2 years later I got in a real Dino.

BTW - Why doesn't anybody ever get worked up about Replica Boats? Is there
such a thing....Oh I couldn't afford a REAL Hunter Yacht so I built
one.....No,
a person like that would get great respect for having the ability to build
their own boat....whys a car so different??

I would have loved to build or own a kit car when a teenager but couldn't
afford it so I got a Triumph Spitfire which was easy to work on, easy to
take
apart and was everything a kit car would be except it was a "real" car.

I don't want a kitcar that much anymore but here in England its a BIG
business. I have helped a good friend build TWO DAX Cobras which were very i
mpressive. Each cost the equilivant of £90k US Dollars and sold immediately
for a
profit....very high standard and in big demand when done right. The Ultima
is a kit
car and thats a pretty impressive car as well...

Havr you guys ever seen the Chesil Speedsters? http://www.chesil.co.uk/
Sold
here ready to go for £25k or thereabouts and its a great looking little car;

many owners use them every day and they are always featured at the big
Classic
and Sports Car Show at the NEC every year in Birmingham....

There is a company in Devon that makes a fantastic copy of a Jag SS100 with
a
fully detailed chassie pretty much identical to the real thing and then
there
are the GT40 copies (The GTD as well) which are probably the only way any of

us will get to experience a car like that.

I don't really have a problem with kit cars/copy cars, ect. Hey if it floats

your boat then why not? I wonder if it is something in us ferrari owners who

see a copy of a Ferrari and think "Hey that guys cheating. He hasn't gone
thru
the pain and expense of ownership like I have yet everybody thinks he has
the
same class/money/style/(or whatever you think the car says about you) that I

have"

Not for me but frankly we need more car buffs in the world before they are
legislated away from us all into some kind of electric pile of crap. And I
can't
help thinking that if guys who build their own BOAT or PLANE are thought
highly of, whats the difference with somebody who builds there own car...
