Hey Stewart! Hope you are doing well.

I am by no means an IT expert, although I am the defacto IT guy in my 
office.

Everytime we have had connectivity problems as you describe, it is due to 
one of two things:

1) Anti-virus/spyware software like McAfee performing firewall functions 
without asking if I wanted them or

2) Windows own built-in firewall (new to WinXP / Vista) blocking other 
machines within an internal network.

I can't tell you how to turn them off without knowing which you have, but my 
first suggestion would be to disable Vista's firewall and/or whatever 
anti-virus system's firewall and see if that faxes it. Then you can 
re-enable the firewalls if you want on a piece-meal basis. On our system 
I've just left them off entirely since everyone within our network trusts 
each other and our internet firewall is through our router.
