Careful, grasshopper. Don't draw mistaken conclusions with incomplete data. The answer: Depends. A modern AC system running R134 that was DESIGNED for running 134 is as cold as a system using R12. The problem your friend has is that he tried to retrofit an R12 system to run R134. Also, general trend is that modern cars are better at AC than older ones. E.g. why the 996/997 have much cooler AC than the 964/993, and the 360/430 is better than the 348/355 (which in turn is worlds better than the 308/328).
