Hey Larry: The kicker for me was that I paid her child support for 2 years
while he lived with me until he was 18. His birthday was in the 11th of the
month, so I prorated the month, only giving her only 1/3 of the normal 'blood
money.' Boy, was she pissed! At his funeral she and her new husband worked the
crowd for 'donations' which they kept before they left town. And I thought I'd
seen it all.

Question

Hi Bill,
I'm really very sorry to hear about your son - there's no words of
condolence suitable when a young son such as yours dies. I wish there was
something I could say that would help ease the pain but I think only time
helps.

I was prepared to do the same - it was done and past history - then I found
I owe almost $2k in taxes & have been looking for all deductions possible (&
impossible it appears). She was with us for 10+ years with the last 3 yrs
totally bedridden. If my wife wasn't an angel I'm not sure I could have
managed the bathing, bathroom stuff, meals, etc. My wife & I both promised our
parents we wouldn;t let them go into a nursing home - they were from a
generation where "nursing home" had a very bad conotation. At one point both
our moms were "living" with us. Debbie's mom was comatose when she arrived -
the doctor sent her home to die but once we got her off the dozen or so meds
she came back (terrible doctor that she trusted). As for my mom - my brother
& his wife were in the process of admitting her to a NH when we went and
brought her home with us. Not a pretty scene. Mom was confused much of the
time.

Sorry about the long story -

Question

Hey Larry. Sorry to hear of your loss. Same thing happened to me when my 23
year-old son was killed on a motorcycle. The hospital and funeral expenses set
me back around $10 grand. I paid for everything. Deduct it on my taxes? Hell
no. I was proud to do it. I wanted to pay it for my only son as a final gesture
of love and gratitude that I felt and still feel for him. He wasn't just
another tax exemption for me, HE WAS MY SON. Of course that's only the way I
feel. Others may feel differently.

Howdy,
Tried to find this answer in the IRS database -
My mom lived with us for the last 10 years of her life (at one point we had
my M-I-L here also - for about 10 m). We provided care with the help of
Hospice during the last 9 months.

She had no estate - basically a zero balance checking acct & no other
assets - I was her executor. I paid for her funeral out of my account.

Question is, can I deduct her funeral expenses? I never claimed her as a
dependent and when she passed away in Jan. 06 I paid around $5k for the
funeral.

I guess I didn't have to pay for it, but *someone* had to. I didn't mind,
I'd do it again - I guess it wasn't manadatory but I'd like to use the
deduction if appropriate.

Thx -
