Hey Tom,
There's so many things about the human brain we haven't explored yet. There's all kinds of abilities we may have and be unaware of. We tend to be kind of arrogant about our understanding of the world around and inside of us - while that's partly true - medically, we've learned more in the past 100 years thanin all the years before that.
We cared for both of our mothers as I mentioned -- my wife & I talked about it yesterday - we never would have known them so well if we had not provided basically hospice care. My m-i-l came to us comatose from all the meds her quack doctor prescribed - we spent 3 months paring down her list of meds and she slowly started to respond. She went to a arthritis specialist for everything and his response was always to write another script.
I found out all kinds of things from my mom I never knew (I had a sister who died shortly after birth when we were in the Philippines) - and she & my wife came to truely love each other. I came to believe she loved Debbie more than she loved me. She was the daughter she never had. It was strange because they seemed to really dislike each other when we were 1st married (we ran away and got married) - they actually came to blows once.

I've never seen an experience like you, your mom & the minister had but I have heard both my Mom & my Dad call my name on several different ocassions. Clear as day. Always happened when no others were around.

Thanks for sharing that experience --

Sorry to hear of that, Larry, and Bill as well, know it was a time ago, but
it always hurts. My mom was living in her house (the house I grew up in)
and I cared for her along with, the last couple months, a hospice nurse. I
remember one particularly strange occurance that I want to share with my
Ferrarilist friends.
Mom was in bed and we were talking when she suddenly looked past me towards
the doorway to the room and said, "Come in, Pastor." Well, no one had come
in the house, I would have heard that, let alone he/she would have had to
come up 8 stairs, a landing, and then 6 more stairs. I turned around
towards the doorway (naturally) and I didn't see anyone. I turned back and,
trying to ask in a diplomatic way, said, "Mom, what are you talking about?"
She told me she saw a Pastor (Lutheran) dressed in brown (yes) with a white
clerical collar. I asked her if she was sure, and she said (words I won't
forget), "Tom, he was as real as you are now."
Just wanted to share,
Best regards,
Tom Reynolds

Question

Hi Bill,
I'm really very sorry to hear about your son - there's no words of
condolence suitable when a young son such as yours dies. I wish there was
something I could say that would help ease the pain but I think only time
helps.

I was prepared to do the same - it was done and past history - then I
found I owe almost $2k in taxes & have been looking for all deductions
possible (& impossible it appears). She was with us for 10+ years with the
last 3 yrs totally bedridden. If my wife wasn't an angel I'm not sure I
could have managed the bathing, bathroom stuff, meals, etc. My wife & I
both promised our parents we wouldn;t let them go into a nursing home - they
were from a generation where "nursing home" had a very bad conotation. At
one point both our moms were "living" with us. Debbie's mom was comatose
when she arrived - the doctor sent her home to die but once we got her off
the dozen or so meds she came back (terrible doctor that she trusted). As
for my mom - my brother & his wife were in the process of admitting her to
a NH when we went and brought her home with us. Not a pretty scene. Mom
was confused much of the time.

Sorry about the long story -

Question

Hey Larry. Sorry to hear of your loss. Same thing happened to me when my
23 year-old son was killed on a motorcycle. The hospital and funeral
expenses set me back around $10 grand. I paid for everything. Deduct it on
my taxes? Hell no. I was proud to do it. I wanted to pay it for my only son
as a final gesture of love and gratitude that I felt and still feel for
him. He wasn't just another tax exemption for me, HE WAS MY SON. Of course
that's only the way I feel. Others may feel differently.

Yer pal, Bill Hilser

Question

Howdy,
Tried to find this answer in the IRS database -
My mom lived with us for the last 10 years of her life (at one point we
had
my M-I-L here also - for about 10 m). We provided care with the help of
Hospice during the last 9 months.

She had no estate - basically a zero balance checking acct & no other
assets - I was her executor. I paid for her funeral out of my account.

Question is, can I deduct her funeral expenses? I never claimed her as a
dependent and when she passed away in Jan. 06 I paid around $5k for the
funeral.

I guess I didn't have to pay for it, but *someone* had to. I didn't mind,
I'd do it again - I guess it wasn't manadatory but I'd like to use the
deduction if appropriate.

Thx -
