I guess that's where my confusion comes in, since that's not an oil
consumption issue, but a compression/rings issue.

Oil consumption would be a symptom - not the problem.

Any PPI will show bad compression.

Hi Steve!
The manual for my 78 308 GTS stated that oil consumption was "normal" up to
2 liters per 600 miles...not sure if the later ones stated this as well.

I bought my car with 15k miles and crashed it with 34k miles and it consumed
around 1 quart per 1500 miles typically...but as Lashdeep mentioned it
varied a bit based on driving style...might only get 1000 miles per quart
under more "spirited" driving...and more sedate cruising might extend it to
2,000 miles.

There was much talk (and internet posts) 1980 to 1982 308GTSi/GTBi having
problems with the rings thatcaused them to consume oil at a very rapid rate
(like 1quart per 150 miles or so). At the time, many owners had rebuilds or
engine replacements under warranty.

Howdy!

Could you point me to where I might find some of this documentation? Mine
burns a bit of oil, but much less than suggested in the owner's manual.
Compression is great all around. In fact it burns less than the 84 911 I
had which was also in good condition. I've talked to _many_ 308 owners and
none ever mentioned of this being an issue.

the 308i's vs. the other 308 models are documented to be the worst
oil burrners. Apparently they had lots of warrenty issues.
