Ferrari issued a recall on a large number of 2-valve 308i engines. The problem was the ignition connector from the Digiplex module that resides on the left side of the engine bay. The connection would become intermittent, and the engine could run on 4-cylinders for significant periods of time. Since the CIS flows full-time, a loss of ignition would result in cylinder wash from unburned gas washing the oil off the bores. This resulted in rapid bore & ring wear, and increased oil consumption followed. All engines affected by this recall were replaced by the factory with replacement motors.

It has been my experience that all 2-valve 308's burn a nominal amount of oil... more when the revs are higher. At a track event, I would have to add half a quart after approx 80-100 miles of track time. In street driving, I'd typically add about a quart every 1500 miles. This covers both the injected and carb models.

YMMV,

I believe that the issue was with the 2 valve injected cars, perhaps 80-82
or so although I am not 100% sure.

My 85 QV uses little to no oil FWIW.

The type and weight of oil you use could also play a factor in oil
consumption. Most 'modern' cars call for a ridiculously low viscosity oil.
AFAIK this is for two reasons ... the tolerances are that much tighter, and
a lighter oil will reduce internal losses thereby improving fuel economy.

Certain older cars, (of which the 308 is one) will do better with a heavier
oil such as 20w50 in most climates (unless you are driving it in sub zero
temps).

I think the owners manual for my QV specifies 10w50, this is an odd
specification which is all but impossible to find, so I've been running a
20/50 synthetic blend with no issues.

Howdy!

Could you point me to where I might find some of this documentation? Mine
burns a bit of oil, but much less than suggested in the owner's manual.
Compression is great all around. In fact it burns less than the 84 911 I
had which was also in good condition. I've talked to _many_ 308 owners and
none ever mentioned of this being an issue.

the 308i's vs. the other 308 models are documented to be the worst
oil burrners. Apparently they had lots of warrenty issues.
