The serious engine problem was deep grooves around the circumference of the
steel cylinder liners about an inch down from the top. They were too deep to
hone out thus requiring new liners. Very hard to find and expensive. Since my
car, he has a 1979 in with the same problem. The only thing we can think of
is condensation. Other repairs included new shocks, rebuild window motors,
convert A/C to R 134 (works great), convert to a single electronic
distributor,
and replace all hoses and belts. A high school friend of mine owned the car
for 20 years and I bought it just before he died of malignant melanoma 4
years ago. It only had 15,000 miles on it, so it sat a lot. I used to fly out
to
southern California where he lived and we would drive up the coast to
Monterey for Speed Week in August. The car has priceless memories for me so I
want
to drive it as much as I can before I get too old to get in and out.

I also agree with Ken Rentiers comments about Racertainment. I think there
should be a requirement that the race car driver must drive the race car at
least 250 miles to the track and his final race finishing spot is not final
until he drives the car back to his starting point. The only thing he can
change at the track is suspension and tuning settings and tires. Mechanical
failures during the race could also be repaired.
