You have be graced with a number of good suggestions but I am going to add  
one more. Can you get a wiring diagram and disable the alarm completely. Those  
things are a real pain in the ass anyway and have you ever seen anyone in the 
 mall pay attention to one except to complain until security finds the owner 
to  have him turn it off.
 
Then, sequentially, if taking the alarm out of the system does not solve  the 
problem I believe that a lot of hte auto parts stores will service on of  
those "remote switch" hookups that mechanics use to test start the car from  
under the bonnet (hood for the Anglophobes amongst us) by just hooking directly 
 
into the circuit and pushing a button. Isolate the column mounted ignition  
switch and see if it starts with the alarm and the switch circuit isolated from 
 
the process. If this fails to resolve the issue you can test the resistance of 
 the wires, when the non-start fault occurs and the ambient temperature in 
their  environment remains the same. After that, all that I can think of is a 
hung up  starter, or relay and circuit breaker issues.
 
Hopefully that helps even though most of it is just restating the  obvious..
