Tom: You have be graced with a number of good suggestions but I am going to add one more. Can you get a wiring diagram and disable the alarm completely. Those things are a real pain in the ass anyway and have you ever seen anyone in the mall pay attention to one except to complain until security finds the owner to have him turn it off. Then, sequentially, if taking the alarm out of the system does not solve the problem I believe that a lot of hte auto parts stores will service on of those "remote switch" hookups that mechanics use to test start the car from under the bonnet (hood for the Anglophobes amongst us) by just hooking directly into the circuit and pushing a button. Isolate the column mounted ignition switch and see if it starts with the alarm and the switch circuit isolated from the process. If this fails to resolve the issue you can test the resistance of the wires, when the non-start fault occurs and the ambient temperature in their environment remains the same. After that, all that I can think of is a hung up starter, or relay and circuit breaker issues. Hopefully that helps even though most of it is just restating the obvious..
