Dust may be partly responsible, but seems they do it even with relatively
new solenoids too.  Heat seems to be the major contributor.

Solenoid it is.  Failure mode is clutch dust buildup on pinion shaft 
causes solenoid to weaken then fail when heat soaked.  Been there, done it
