Same advice I got.

I found it all but impossible to get to the back of
the dash with it in situ.

Yes, you are right.  They make screwdrivers that clamp
the screws and they make magnetic screwdrivers.  That
would be my call.  I go two of mine out, one was
missing and the other just dropped into the abyss.  It
will roll around and eventually drop out some hole. 
After I got the dash out, there doesn't seem to be
anything for the errant screw to interfere with - at
least not in my '79 308GTB.
