Hi Britt,
You said <<US doesn't have quite as good availability of diesel at all stations as over here if I
remember correctly>>>

Actually, finding diesel hasn't really been a problem for me - along the East Coast. Agreed, some intersections with a gas station on every corner will only have diesel at 2 of 4 corners but that's not bad. I've used a diesel as a daily driver (when I parked my MGB to restore it) and long distance cruiser for the last 30 years and have never had a problem.

We typically have a favorite local fuel station which does a lot of 18 wheel business so we know the fuel is fresh and contains the seasonal additives - flow improvers & moisture removers in the winter, uhhhh.. some other stuff in the summer ;-)

Take care - have fun with that Diesel!!

Perhaps some areas have difficulty but I havent encountered any.

And you can only guess at the advances being made in the last 10 years over
here on the modern diesel. VW has a new V6 diesel for the VW/Audi range. BMW
and Merc make great engines. I am not ready for a diesel in my "fun" cars but
for day to day use when the huge torque and great mileage matters, a diesel is a
no brainer. Another interesting thing, my 2.0 diesel BMW 320d from 2 years
ago needed its FIRST oil change and service at 27,000 miles! That is on the BMW
computer in the car. 27,000 miles! Pretty good I thought for cost of
ownership.

Unfortunately compared to the UK where diesel is at every pump the US doesn't
have quite as good availability of diesel at all stations as over here if I
remember correctly. That will also affect uptake of diesel cars.

How about the Ferrari diesel? Anybody else here about this?

Britt

Let me add to reports about a surprisingly pleasant experience with
diesels.
Ten years ago my wife and I and another couple rented a turbo-diesel Alfa
Romeo for a 15 day holiday all through the wine producing areas of France.

Aside from a bit more noise when the car first was started in the morning,
the
performance and ease of use of the car was every bit as good as a a
gasoline
powered car. The fact that the mileage was far better and the cost of the
fuel itself far lower than for gas made it a great experience. Of course
the
fuel cost differential was due to different tax policies, but the fuel
economy
alone was worthwhile.

BTW. ethanol is a bad, but expensive, joke being played by politiicians who

are influenced by the farm lobby.

I cruised the French Autoroutes in a Peugeot diesel some years back,
and was amazed at how nice the car was. I can only imagine how the
current iterations must be. As you must know the US has gone to low-
sulfur diesel fuel so we are now seeing the early introduction of
these cars except in the most "progressive" states where they are
planning on banning all internal combustion. In California there is a
bill before the house in Sacramento to prohibit oxidative reactions
of any description - the Equine Assistance Act.

Actually, they are all Equine Asses in the CA house imho.
