Let me add to reports about a surprisingly pleasant experience with diesels.
Ten years ago my wife and I and another couple rented a turbo-diesel Alfa
Romeo for a 15 day holiday all through the wine producing areas of France.
Aside from a bit more noise when the car first was started in the morning, the
performance and ease of use of the car was every bit as good as a a gasoline
powered car. The fact that the mileage was far better and the cost of the
fuel itself far lower than for gas made it a great experience. Of course the
fuel cost differential was due to different tax policies, but the fuel economy
alone was worthwhile.

BTW. ethanol is a bad, but expensive, joke being played by politiicians who
are influenced by the farm lobby.

I cruised the French Autoroutes in a Peugeot diesel some years back,
and was amazed at how nice the car was. I can only imagine how the
current iterations must be. As you must know the US has gone to low-
sulfur diesel fuel so we are now seeing the early introduction of
these cars except in the most "progressive" states where they are
planning on banning all internal combustion. In California there is a
bill before the house in Sacramento to prohibit oxidative reactions
of any description - the Equine Assistance Act.

Actually, they are all Equine Asses in the CA house imho.

Best,
