Even in a larger car that's suited for touring or a GT car, I still like a stick. I think it allows you to better control the engine in wet or snow conditions, though I don't think many of you drive your F cars in the snow. It also allows you to choose exactly where to upshift or down, and the speed of your shift.
Some will say you can't shift as fast with a stick as with paddles, but really, these are just numbers on paper. Even in a DE event, does the difference even come into play for anyone on this list? As for road use, why even talk about the performance advantages of paddles, if any. To appreciate any advantage means you have to be driving your stick car 10/10ths, and then say a paddle would give me a little extra. In the real world, it just doesn't happen. The whole idea about a roading going sports car, even one that does DE events is to make it the most entertaining car you can, not just the fastest. Do you think Ferrari put paddles in their F1 cars to make them more entertaining or fun to drive for MS? No, they wanted to make the car more boring and faster so he didn't have to spend as much time thinking about driving, and more about getting around the guy in front of him.
You can play with a paddle and pretend you're an F1 driver, or learn to heal and toe and then know you're in the company of people who really know how to drive. NOTHING equals the pleasure of a perfect heal and toe, catch the right gear and clipping that apex just so!! Do that right and you'll really feel one with the car!
As for a full auto, sure, why not if you're in traffic all the time or just going straight down the highway. but why not just get a big Merc? It will do everything the 456 does, but probably cheaper to run and a better back seat.
Just my thoughts, which probably aren't worth much coming from a porsche owner. :-)
Pass those cocoa puffs Steve.

Hey FG,
I am not going to be the one to declare that autos suck and manuals rule. I just know what makes me feel good. I'd recommend the same for others. I figured a description of why I really prefer a clutch might be of some use to those feeling out where they want to go. To me it is indeed visceral. To others, the choice might be more pragmatic. By weighing in I just hoped to add to the spectrum of opinions to help Robert make his choice.
Good Luck Robert,
