I believe the prevailing practice of financial institutions is normally not 
to advise customers about this [presumably remote] possibility under state 
law.

BTW, most states also post information about such property in the Internet 
(besides advertising periodically).  See, e.g.: http://www.missingmoney.com/

(Now you can waste some time checking whether you or relatives/friends can 
claim property.)
