Your sunroof switch shouldn't always be powered, mine isn't. I just
checked. You can find what you need behind the panel. Works for cars
with and without sunroof.

I have an E39 as well, but the E46 does not have any access to the keyed power in the roof panel, as all of the power to the sunrrof switches seem always hot (?) and there is no good ground. I will have to take a closer look.
