When would one "often wish" to disconnect the battery from the car, but want
to keep it under charge from a battery tender? If you disconnect the car
from the battery to work on the car, then you have eliminated the main
reason for discharge, so I don't see where it would need to continue to be
charged. I just find the cig lighter to be SO convenient, and has two added
benefits:

1) You can easily use it on another car, with no special wiring needed
(assuming the cig lighter is energized when the car is "off".

2) You greatly reduce the risk of driving off with the battery still
connected to the battery tender. Don't laugh, it happens to people all the
time.

My 308 had an add on battery switch mounted in the front trunk, but I rarely
used it, as each time I turned off the car, and then turned it back on, I
had to perform the following:

1) Reset the analog clock
2) Reset the clock on the cd player
3) Reset the radio presets on the cd player
4) Reset equalizer settings on cd player

With my 355 (which has a battery switch as standard equipment) I have a
fourth additional step:

5) Start car with all accessories off, and allow ECU to reset engine
parameters...which takes approximately 10 minutes of idling.

Disconnecting the battery is easy enough, but a pain to get the car going
again with all the stuff that needs to be reset, and with more recent
production Ferraris, actually not recommended. As the constant resetting of
the ECU parameters is not conducive to good drivability (this was advised by
Brian Crall, technical advisor on Ferrarichat.com)

You should already have a battery shut off switch in the form of a battery
ground (dis)connector. It is between the left headlight bucket and the
spare tire compartment immediately below the hood strut.

It is also helpful to establish a cable from the battery to the front
grill area or to the right near the horn compressor soas to
plug in your battery charger. That battery charger cable should
be fused and should go directly to both the battery pos and neg
terminals.

I.e. don't use ground for your tender as you will often wish to
disconnect the battery from the car wiring yet leave it under
charge with your tender. Which is why the cig socket or light
socket is a secondary choice.
