Hey Pat: One last little tidbit before I put this whole thing to rest. Some baseball people have said that with the modern expansion of the game, the skill of the Major League players has been deluted. I have a friend, John Tompson of the Kansas City Royals who I met in Tucson during spring training a few years back when he pitched for The Rockies. A good pitcher who has never had a winning seaon in 9 years in the majors. He is in the last year of a two-year contract worth $7 million dollars. To me, John is just another roster filler like Stryker is to F1. To me he would be a good class AAA pitcher. ?No more, no less. Back in Feller's day only the cream rose to the top. Nowdays you get a lot of milk mixed in. cLyDe's poor example of the Flyer going supersonic is like asking when do the Giko cavemen start their new?French cooking show on FoodTV? Some things are timeless whether it be an impressionist painting, a Ferrari 250 TDF, or a Bob Feller fastball. OK Clyde... back to recommending Ferrari prices, parking locations for Willi, and commercial jets. In 1941 Ted Williams batted .406 while the league averaged .266 In 1980 George Brett batted .390 while the league average was .269 In 1994 Tony Gwynn batted .394 while the league average was .269 I don't see an appreciable difference. If the pitching was easier when Williams played you would have expected the league average to be a lot higher. He was as superior to the rest of the league as Brett or Gwynn. BTW, there have only been 13 .400 seasons in history, comprised of only eight players. I will check on the fighter ace story as well you needed to down 5 migs and I don't remember him being one but will check it out And one of the reasons he could hit 400 was they did not pitch as fast! To all Listers under the age of 60: Ted Williams was the last baseball player to hit .400 or better for the entire?season in the Major Leagues, playing many years for the Boston Red Sox in the 1940's/50's. He was also a jet fighter ace during the Korean conflict. His eyesight was 20-05. He could count the stiches on a 100 mph fastball thrown by Bob Feller. (don't ask!) He currently resides (frozen) in Phoenix, Az., standing upright in a cylinder with a temperature of -275* minus his head, which is also frozen. One of those cryogenics labs that promise you can come back after modern science can cure you of what killed you in the first place. You know, just like Walt Disney is. I just hope that they don't get the heads mixed up when it comes time to thaw. Can you imagine Walt in a baseball uniform ... or the 'Splendid Splinter' drawing Mickey Mouse? I hate to say it, but you're starting to sound like Ted Williams these days. All Ted does now is stand around and keep chill'in. For all of those Listers who don't get?the Ted thing?... send me an e-mail and I'll explain. > > Yer pal, Shitbox Bubba > Email and AIM finally together.
