Wade: do not despair - they are giving you the worst-case scenario. We always do that for cogent reasons. Sounds like a radial nerve + artery. The nerve will regrow but only 0.5 mm a month - return of function will be slow and unpredictable, but it will happen. The orbital floor fracture will need elevation but is fixable. Be thankful she didn't bleed out. Thoughts and prayers. I am sorry to read this! One thing I'd like to say about the MD's words of "encouragement." In my experience with emergency rooms, surgeries from serious injuries (ski and motorcycle racing), doctors are always be painfully pessimistic. They seem to offer nothing but gloom and doom (a malpractice tactic perhaps). I remember an ER doctor telling me once (after I regained consciousness on the table) that I'd probably never walk again (9 broken bones). I told the doctor to his face (pumped full of morphine) "f**k you, I'll show you how wrong you are." I don't even have a limp. Another example: Nine months ago, a niece of mine had a baby born with heart complications. The doctor said, as they put the baby on the helicopter headed for Children's Hospital: "We'll do what we can, but he's the worst we've ever seen." Absolutely devastated the new mom, who had to stay behind in another hospital! What an a**hole! Long story short, the kid is now a big healthy stud of a nine month old. Keep a positive attitude here and we'll all hope she's left only with a few light scars and a great story to tell. - Bob Prosser ----- Original Message ----- From: Wade R. She went thought 5 hours of arterial surgery and the doctors were able to save her hand, however they said it will be a slim chance that she will regain any use at all out of it. On top of that she broke the orbital bone in her eye socket, has multiple fractures on the left side of her face and possible skull and spinal fractures. She is in for a very long and difficult road to recovery, Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and I will send out updates as I get them.
