Of course we will add Lori to our prayer list, and ask our friends to do so
as well.

Please remember that initial assessments and prognoses are virtually always
less than optimistic as all must (should?) be prepared for the worst possible
outcome as well as challenged to exceed the expectations of the
physician/surgeon. In actuality, a more realistic prognosis can be developed
by the
subsequent treatment team and case manager. While it seems an oxymoron, you
are
fortunate to live in a state with the medical facilities at Duke University in
reasonably close geographical proximity. After the crisis is controlled and
the acute phase of treatment is addressed you will have time to research
specialty hospitals and rehabilitation centers as well as orthopaedic
surgeons,
neurosurgeons and rehabilitative specialty physicians. You will also find that
there are subspecialties in each area of medicine including physicians and
surgeons who specialize specifically in the hand and corrective methodologies
that relate to that appendage.

When the initial crisis has passed, and you have both the chronological and
emotional time to address these issues you may find not only that the initial
predictions of stages and degrees of recovery are revised in a positive
manner but that the opportunities for access to specialty clinics expands
greatly.
It is not my place to say, but you are presently dealing with the initial
crisis with prayer and medicine, which is the sum of what we have available to
us at such a juncture and those assets will maximize the opportunities for
the most positive of outcomes. One gift that you may give to Lori is optimism.
There will be a number of emotional bridges she will cross in the process of
healing and in each your attitude can become a critical element of progress.
Sharing with her the fact that many are praying for her, and following her
progress, as will certainly be the case with the members of this list will be
one of the things that we can do that will hopefully allow you to keep that
positive outlook and benefit thereby.
