Has anyone on the list ever heard the song The Key to Her Ferrari by
Thomas Dolby?
All automakers solicit feedback from the purchasers of their cars and trucks, as this makes for more appealing future vehicles. Ferrari, being Ferrari, has taken this to new heights with their FXX program, which debuted in 2005; this entailed a series of special track-only cars, the Enzo-based FXXs, which were sold to "Client Test Drivers" (including F1 champ Michael Schumacher) as rolling test-beds, and the cars' performance was monitored in 14 group test sessions and 14 private sessions. That program has been extended through 2009 with an evolution package for the cars, designed to further improve their aerodynamics, electronics, handling and performance.
The updated FXXs will sport new rear wing profiles and a redesigned rear diffuser, improvements that help trim the FXXs' Fiorano track lap time from 1'18" to under 1'16". The cars' 6,262cc V-12 now makes 860hp at 9,500 rpm, and shifting of the automated manual gearbox has been quickened from 80 to 60 milliseconds. A new traction control system is driver-controllable to nine settings, and Composite Ceramic Material brake discs and a redesigned suspension keep the car in control.
The FXX evolution package includes participation in a series of international track events, two of which will be in North America.
