I had a Winchester Mod. 1892 lever action with an octagon barrel, chambered for
the .45-70 cartridge. It was made/frirst sold in 1895. A friend loaded up some
400 grain bullets, and from what I saw and felt, it could bring a buff or
anything else walking this earth to it's knees with a single shot and kicked
like the proverbial mule. Needless to say, I was in awe.
They say that the new sniper cartridge (.413 cal?) has confirmed kills of over
2,200 yards. Thats 22 football fields put end to end! WOW!

Interesting (off) topic subject. I missed the initial post and so I can only
assume that the question does, in fact, pertain to an "official rifle
cartridge" perhaps one to be carried in the automobile at times when one it
traveling in remote areas, parking it unlocked in the ghetto per Clyde's
instructions, or as protection against the "road-raged" individual who is
pissed
off
because you passed him on the right on the interstate because he was driving
5mph under the speed limit for no apparent reason except for the fact that
he/she failed the psychological test to become a state trooper and now this is
the
only way that they can impose their will upon other drivers since they were
denied the blue/red lights and siren.

The .308 (or as Wikpedia notes also designated 7.62mm NATO, OR 7.6x51 mm) is
an acceptable candidate but IMNSHO not nearly the best one as an official
rifle cartridge. And, of course, given the close quarters of a Ferrari cockpit
it would necessarily need to be supplemented by an "official pistol/revolver
cartridge" as well. Power of the 7.62mm is better than the 5.56 mm cartridge
that is now the NATO standard, but unless utilized with an appropriate carbine
(again the close quarters of a Ferrari militate a shorter barreled rifle) is
not eve a very good choice. A Winchester Model 100 carbine in that caliber
would be a fine choice for such a carbine, but is now a collector's firearm
and its current value could serve to preclude such usage, even by the
relatively well financed listmembers. Personally, while I own such a Win. Mod.
100,
the 7.62mm "long" gun that I utilize in an AR-10 with 16", the minimum legal
without additional paperwork and registration documation) barrel length and a
20 round magazine. A nice, stable firearm, though as with most semi-automatic
rifles there is a requirement for maintenance that might equal, in relative
terms, that of a Ferrari to guarantee proper functioning at the critical
moment (which should be an absolute requirement for any "official" cartridge).

Right now, I carry a Marlin Mod. 1895GS stainless steel lever action carbine
for any excursions into the underdeveloped areas of our country such as the NV
highways. Its .45-70 caliber cartridge has withstood the test of time, having
started out used for taking Bison as food in the old west in the Trapdoor
Springfield Rifle, and has been significantly improved in both loadings and
bullets for use in modern firearms such as the 1895GS. Fewer rounds than the
AR-10, also fewer sharp(er) and exposed parts to damage the interior of the
car

and with manual extraction through the use of a lever actuated action better
firing discipline and the an ability to be cleared with immediate recognition
that may benefit the occasional shooter who might carry it for defense but
practice little with the rifle after sighting it in. Incidentally, both
firearms, the 1895GS and the carbine upper receiver group of the AR-10 are
equipped
with open sights which are, again IMNSHO, more suitable for close encounters
of the hostile kind.

Right now I am in the process of testing a replacement for my "glove box"
and by the bed handgun. Remembering, of course that the carrying of a handgun
for personal defense in many states may require a permit or be somewhat
restricted to either plain view, or to be carried in the glove box but not the
console so as to limit immediate accessibility. I still carry either my
Detonics

9mm or my SigSauer M239 in .40S&W on my person and having carried a pistol,
more specifically a variant of the Sig for about the last 10 years before
retiring, and ever since that will be unlikely to change for personal
preference

reasons. I am, experimenting with a Taurus "Judge" model revolver with a
cylinder that is chambered for both the .45 Colt and the .410 2.5in. shotgun
cartridges. This is my first Taurus firearm that I have ever owned given their
reputation in the past of lesser quality firearms but my examination of this
firearm (which is backed by a lifetime warranty) has caused me to conclude that

it appears to be a fine quality firearm, every bit equal to current S&W or
Colt production. The idea of carrying a revolver (or placing it at one's
bedside) that chambers a #3 buckshot shotgun cartridge in sequences (the ideal
one
is still in the testing stage) with the .45 Long Colt makes it a fine short
range, self-defense encounter profile firearm. I should also note that a
number of the "gurus" of the firearms magazine ilk concur with this conclusion.

I would suggest that it be noted that I favor moving up to larger caliber
firearms for any self-defense or survival encounters. This is predicated upon
the documented need to resolve favorably such encounters as soon as practicable
and with an outcome that guarantees, to the greatest extent possible, that
the adversary in the encounter be disabled thus terminating in the appropriate
 manner.

I do recognize that firearms, and cartridge, choices are a highly personal
choice and any "official cartridge" will be subject to preferential challenge
and I can respect any other choice(s) that are predicated upon extensive
practical and anecdotal experiecnce.
