Re: Tom, is Everything O.K.?

We have a similar story to Tom's. Power went away Monday morning around
2:00 a.m., we also lost phone (which is also the internet). And since so
much damage was done, there was also very poor cell phone coverage. But,
phone came back up on Tuesday and we got power back on last night. So,
today was getting everything back to normal and stocking up on food for the
upcoming snow storm.

Generators are fantastic!!! Machines. Everyone needs one. Our 6500W
generator powered the downstairs heater blower, refrigerator, anaerobic
septic, Koi pond filter, TV, satellite receiver, kid's water bed, clocks and
sparing use of lights (just don't turn on every light in the house and leave
them on). We have natural gas for hot water, cook stove, gas log fireplace,
and heater. And the outside LP grill. So, other than no Christmas lights,
not using the upstairs, and not heating the garage, everything was almost
normal. The downside was .5 gallons of gas per hour. And I didn't run the
generator while we slept, so mornings were cold. We kept an eye out for the
neighbors to see when the electric came back on to switch everything back
over. So, once again, I highly recommend getting a generator before you
need it. 6500 Watts seams to be big enough and $700 spent now can seriously
make a terrible situation very easy to deal with.

The real crappy side was most all businesses were closed including
restaurants. They even closed Wall-Mart on Monday. But, Wall-Mart was the
first thing to get power back. And Quick Trip convenience stores all got
generators by Monday afternoon and everyone of them were open. I saw a line
of cars on Tuesday morning roughly 2 blocks long just to get into the QT
parking lot to get gas.

We had movie night at the church last night so people could come in, warm
up, watch a move, be entertained for a few hours. About 50 showed up just
to watch a movie.

This was bad, at the peak, over 1 million homes were without power.

Thanks for asking!

Dave

Well, now that you mention it...
Power went out at our house probably on Sunday night late, but didn't notice
it was out until Karen's 5:00 A.M. Monday newscast. Luckily we have a gas
fireplace and kept reasonably warm and comfy in a confined area. The 3 dogs
didn't know what to make of it, but they enjoyed it, I think. Streets
weren't bad as far as ice, but lots of trees, I mean LOTS of trees went down
for the count. We had one overhanging our garage door/driveway so that my
side was clear, but Karen couldn't get her car out for a day or so. But, we
had a guy come out, and hung on to him for dear life. Got the drive clear,
cut/hauled, and around $600 later we're minus one pretty tree. Thankfully no
one was hurt, nothing fell on the house, and not having a wood burning
fireplace, no log rolled out and started the house on fire, killing people,
which is what HAS happened to some in the area. Went out for dinner last
night, saw a TV and said, "What's that?"
Thanks for askin'
Tom in Tulsa
(with rain and snow expected for the weekend, but hopefully no
accumulation.)

I keep seeing that y'all are having a heck of an ice storm up there with
multiple power outages in the Sooner State. Let us know how yer doing. If
your power is out and you're on generator power, we're having fried gator
tail with all the fixins. Okra, poke salad, fresh tomatoes out of our
garden, and hush puppies, washed down with Grandma's steet tea tonight.
Y'all are always welcome to spend a few days with us until things get sorted
out up there. Bismarck is only 5 1/2 hours from Tulsa. Let us know.

  Yer gt4 pal, Bubba
