Ok, Dish DVRs work way way different than TiVo, Comcast, and the others.
With Dish DVRs there is no "Quality" setting because of the way it works,
quality is not degraded during record and playback. Basically, the Dish DVR
records the satellite bit stream (or terrestrial ATSC bit stream) exactly as
it is sent still in the digital form (before it gets decompressed and
converted to playable video). So, on playback, the hard drive simply plays
the recorded satellite (or terrestrial) data stream back as if it is just
now receiving it and then the "receiver" decompresses it and spits it out as
new video. It is a very slick way of doing satellite recording.

That is why it is so much easier with Dish. I too am a huge Dish DVR fan.
But, there are many TiVo fans on this list. So, obviously, both work very
well, just differently. With the Dish VIP622 I can record 3 simultaneous HD
shows (2 satellite HD bit streams and 1 terrestrial HD bit stream). It
rocks!

And yes, I too have a DVD recorder attached to my DVR to make a more
permanent copy of things I catch on my DVR that I want to keep.

Did I set my system up the dumb man's way?

I have the Dish DVR which seems super easy for me. $5 monthly fee (in
addition to my Dish subscription) and 80 plus hours of hard drive space.
Naturally I ran out of space so I picked up a $50 (on sale) DVD Recorder
from Walmart
a couple of weeks ago and wired it in between the Dish Receiver/DVR and the

TV like any normal VCR. Picked up a pack of 50 DVD-R's from Microcenter
for
$10 and record everything that I wanted to keep - up to 6 hours per disk.
I
understand to have the need of all the latest high tech gadgets, but what
happened to simplicity for the "average" Ferrari owner...
