Now that I have digital on my TV I get Military channel and they had the 10 
greatest fighters - naturally the P51 Mustang won - but the most amazing 
thing was a video that I've never seen before showing a P-51 being started - 
in slow motion the big prop turned over and fuel fumes were coming from the 
exhaust and lighting off - the only thing better would be if it were dark 
out!  I wish I could describe the way the fumes drifted away from the cowl 
all a-fire ;-) they were like clouds --

Okay as usual, cLyDe's comment about car fires is both funny, and laced 
with

a hint of the truth there.
Here is the real reason that 308's catch on fire, and it relates to ALL
308's and even the hailed 328:
1)  Check the fuel filler neck hose.  This the short 5" hose between the

fuel filler neck and the left gas tank. It can rot out, and leak gas...and

it will fall right onto the hot exhaust manifold and "blammo" fire!  Why

carb cars mostly?  Simply because they are old, and the first 308's made.

The problem can occur right up to the 328.  Have all the fuel lines

inspected and replaced (there are lines between the two tanks that can 
leak

too)...even the newest 328 is 19 years old now.  The oldest 308GTS is 30

years old (1978).
2)  Ferraris are unique in that they have two ignition systems, one for 
each

bank of the V8.  When you lose the ignition in a typical car, the car 
dies,

and you pull over.  In a Ferrari if you lose only half the ignition, the 
car

will continue to run, but at very reduced power.  The other side bank that

is not running is still receiving fuel, which is spit into the exhaust

manifolds and runs down to the superheated catalytic converter.  And guess

what?  Fire!  But again, this can happen on any year Ferrari with twin

ignition and catalytic converters.

Between those two, I would definitely go with the 328.  Much better car.

see no advantage to the QV 308.  Does anyone else?
Being me, I'd much rather have a carbed 308 than either of the above.
If it is a low mileage garage queen, figure on spending $6K the first year
replacing anything that moves (or is supposed to move).  Either that, or
leave it as a garage queen and do nothing.
If it is a regularly driven example, figure on spending $2K the first 
year.
