Re: GT4 video...

Good morning Peter, et al.,

My '79 308gtb is bone-stock except for fluids.

In cool weather I turn on the ignition and allow 10
seconds or so for the float bowls to top up. I doubt
that is needed but there are sometimes weeks-long gaps
between driving my car. I then give the throttle one
press to cause the accelerator pumps to give a little
squirt. I then turn the key without touching the
throttle. Once it starts I may need to work the
throttle a little to enrich the mixture but it will
generally find its idle pretty quickly. That's in
cooler weather - 50-70F.

When its cold-to-coldish, below 50, I follow the
same procedure but have to help it AFTER it starts by
applying a little throttle for a faster idle, as
described in my previous note. Otherwise, it will
often die. Again, no choke applied.

When its warm outside (70+ F) and if I've driven it
within the past few days, I just get in, turn the key
and it starts. No throttle games required.

In all cases, I monitor the oil pressure. My
engine is a dry sump so there's never any lack of oil.
It goes to 6 bar about as fast as the gauge can
travel. Such is not the same with oil temperature.
Since the dry sump system has lots of oil and it
doesn't live in a nice warm sump, it takes quite a
while to show any movement on the oil temp gauge. And
I don't push the car until I see oil temperature. By
that time, coolant temp is at normal. Yes, I drive it
in that interval but I avoid loads and stay under
3500-4000 rpm.

Two other points might come into play here. (1) My
car is the last of the carbed cars and as such, it had
dual electronic ignitions, not the points and
condenser of the GT4. (2) I don't use the choke
because I don't drive the car much in cold weather and
more importantly because IT ISN'T HOOKED UP! Ever try
to reattach a choke cable in the console? I either
couldn't get it reattached or didn't have the patients
to work on it lokg enough to do so.

Happy Sunday morning. I'm now inspired to go to
the garage. :-o
