My understanding is that the newer oils with slip agents are (for lack of
better descriptors) "too thin" and that's why there is more in the way of
issues vs. the NS fluids in the 308 trannys. Also, the synthetics allegedly
have great cleaners in them that wash away the crud that may be holding back
any leaky seals, etc.....AM I CORRECT IN THIS THINKING OR AM I WAY OFF?????

I"m having the exact OPPOSITE problem as you Hans. My car always had
Redline in it. After the accident/drop gear issue it came back to me with
Mobil 1 in it and now I get 'chattering' in 4th and 5th. If I'm too
aggressive 5th will grind. I never had those problems with RL. The next
warm day with no salt on the roads, I'm changing out the tranny fluid to all
Redline 75/90NS.

Yup. I mixed in a qt of the "non-NS" (ie regular 75W90) to get a
bit of positrac lube.

Positrac shudders, pops, and binds, 2nd and 3rd are 'notchy', and it has
a minor grind going into 4th at redline that wasn't there immediately before
changing oil. Before changing oil, the only trans issue was the
infamous "can't go into 2nd when cold". That disappeared after the
oil change, but the other problems popped up.

If I run the holy pee out of the car on a hot day, the oil heats up
and thins down. Then it shifts OK. But that is not practical on
a daily basis.

Gut feeling based on much studying: I need a thinner oil.
MTL has been recommended extensively, and is apparently
the fluid of choice for 348 and 355 Challenge cars. I'll
try it soon.

Hans.
