Hi Jim,
Backfires will indicate a lean condition which can be caused by a lean mixture when letting off the accel pedal quickly or it can be caused by a vacuum leak somewhere. Rich is indicated by a black exhaust pipe & poor MPGs.


I assume you need something a little more precise? BTW, I would strongly suggest you not attempt any changes to the mixture without the proper monitoring equipment - you can get away with a too lean condition if driving like Grannie, but WOT will melt pistons.
