No myth at all.
The linkage is 'attached' to the shift forks in the transmission. Each rides in a groove in the synchro sleeve (outer portion of the synchro) which us spinning.
Yes, it all is in an oil bath, but there is still metal to metal contact, so continuous pressure on the lever will put a load on the shift fork(s) which will accelerate wear.
If you really want to understand this, buy a cheap junk transmission (not a transaxle, the make doesn't matter) at a junk yard and tear it apart.
