Too bad about Bob Packwood.  I met him on numerous occasions.
He was always very approachable.  Once was in the Eugene airport.
He ask if he could sit down and join us at the restuarant table.  He
didn't know us from Adam, but was waiting for a plane and just
wanted to shoot the breeze.

Another time was in a bar here in the small town of Roseburg.  He
was sitting alone at a table in the middle of the room, sipping on
a "beverage".  I asked if I could join him.  We talked for quite some
time.

Unfortunately, it appears as if those "beverages" were part of his
downfall.
