No, sorry Bubba. No urban legend. I read about it here and told my mechanic. He said he doubted it and muttered something about people not knowing how to tighten a filter. Less than two weeks later he had 3 of his customers blow the filters and then he was a believer! One of these guys is a close neighbor who destroyed his 328 engine. Ended up buying a new engine from Egham (marenello spares). Tried to claim off Ferrari UK and they didn't want to know. Happened to a few guys here in the UK FOC that I know. It was the Ferrari List that I first heard about it on and I made sure my car didn't have one of those bad batch filters. From then on I used Baldwins (on the 328) but the 400i and my Alfa have been happy on UFIs.... Britt Hey Paul: I've had my gt4 since June, 1999, and changed filters every 4K, using only UFIs. I've put 50K on it with NO oil baths. But then, it's only a Shitbox, right cLyDe? Sounds like a 99% urban legend to me. Think of all the UFIs used all over the world, and how many actually burst. Sounds like it's a toss-up on whether you get hit by a?piece of space junk?or have a UFI malfunction first. Juan Manuel Fangio? probably owes his life to, when jumping into his Mercedes 300SLR at the start of the 1955 LeMans du?24, having the gearshift lever run up inside his pants leg, delaying his start by some 20 seconds. Fangio was some?50 meters behind Mike Hawthorn and Pierre Leveigh when they came together on the pit straight, killing Levegh and some 80 odd spectators. In all the thousands of LeMans type starts that have taken place over the years, That's the only one that I've ever heard of that a driver, whe jumping into his car, stuffed the gearshift knob up his pants-leg. I guess it happens about as often as a UFI bursts, or you get hit on the head by the frozern contents of an airliner toilet. ?
