Matt: I've been having the same concerns about the diminishing amount of Zinc in our oils, Dino for the Silver Cloud and other RR's and synthetic (if it even has Zinc, or if it contains a reasonable substitute) for the F-348. It is getting to be oil change time for several vehicles, including the above, and I'm hoping that some good recommendations are received. I am always hesitant to use any of the synthetics on my older cars, of any manufacture or origin,. for fear that they will jump in and clean up all of the residues in the cars and create leaks or clog some of hte oil passages. My 348 had been using it for quite a while before I got it and doesn't seem to have suffered any for the use so I'm going to continue there. One problem with the older cars is that the manufacturer's oil recommendations are completely useless. I can't imaging finding, let alone using, a single weight, non-detergent oil in a car and then getting into 1000 mi. oil change intervals, with filter changes every other oil change. I think the situation is the same as with tires, it would be hard to find the same product that was used 40-50 or more years ago, even if someone were to wish to forgo any improvements. And then there is the question of which coolant to use, with different compounds popping up daily and each for a single engine type use. Makes one long for those old days when oil came in silly cans that required one of those special openers, and it was just a question of using quality brands in the correct amount, particularly in the area of anti-freeze, and getting on with it.
