Stardust - 1968. Was there too Stephen - Bubba got us photo passes. I had, for years the front of Bruce Mclarens car, well, the right fender.. I got that from his crew after they changed the front end. Caused when the green flag dropped and 5 cars went through turn 1 where two could go. Off goes Bruce, and the Ferrari and the Honker Ford with Andretti I think. Bubba and I protected the PROVA license plate from the Ferrari. Re Mr. Hall - Lother Motschbacher's left rear hub broke going around turn one and he went from full on to nearly stop - Jim was right behind him - by about 50 yards into this blind right turn - BLAM - up in the air. I had my back to the cars crash, shooting pictures down the front straight, but when he landed, it sounded like a huge hard boiled egg - a very big soft blumph. I turned to see what happened and saw lots and lots of dust and water - water? NO fuel. The car had broken in half, Halls legs, just below the knees, were at right angles. There was about a 1/4 inch of fuel on the desert floor, very ungreenly seeping into the environ. I backed out of area as meds were there almost before Jim hit the turf. Nearly saved his body panel with 66 on it - well, the top 2/3s. THE last Stardust race. Boy, did it get cold as soon as the sun set.

That McLaren fender was the thickness of a credit card - made of three layers - a ultra thin under coat painted black - air - held apart by ultra thin strips of 1/2" wide foam, and the top layer solid orange. That half fender weighed nuthing. I could even lift it.
