Yikes that sucks a lot, especially since I live in IL. Guess my stay in IL may not be permanent. Its getting so a guy can't live anywhere in this country without feeling the government breathing down his neck, or sticking its fingers in my back pocket.

But make no mistake about how completely corrupt government in Illinois is! Just look at the roads and the construction projects they start (and seem incapable of finishing). In the time it takes a Dallas crew to finish the high five interchange, a Chicago crew can do one small 2 lane bridge, badly enough that it needs to be redone in a year. That said you don't want to speed on IL roads anyhow, potholes the size of Escalades, and no money to repair them since it all goes to the Governor's jet fuel. If I want to go for a nice drive I head 4 miles north into Wisconsin, where even the county roads are miraculously clean, level, twisty and scenic... I am going to Road America Saturday morning, and setting the Nav to avoid highways :).

I think if you look at the intersection cameras in Texas you find that the revenue was great for about 1-3 months, then everyone learns the locations and they stop making real money. Then the local gov gets aggressive with light timing to make more money, and they get sued for causing more problems than they solve (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-02-14-redlightside_x.htm). Same thing will happen with speed cameras. Random speed traps give folks a chance to gamble a bit with their speed, speed cameras will just change the behavior entirely, folks will slam on their brakes on the highways, more accidents, less speeders, more gawkers. And the IL government will have spent money on another red herring. Those 500 extra troopers will come in handy cleaning up the mess.

As for the Gov flying... I honestly don't blame him, if you ever drive anywhere 15 miles south of Chicago in this state you will quickly want to kill yourself for lack of turns, hills, and any scenery other than corn... You could skip around through Indiana or Iowa, but you would just want to die faster... There isn't a thing to see until you hit Missouri.

I agree with Ken here though our "leaders" are out of touch with the "people", maybe if they all drove Ferrari's they would understand the "people" better? I am probably just as out of touch with the "people" and honestly, I don't really want to touch too many of them anyhow.

"In the long term, the [Illinois] governor is considering installing speed cameras in each direction of every interstate in the 20 State Police districts across Illinois to raise $50 million a year in revenue -- enough for 500 more troopers. The money could support an "elite tactical team" and bolster everything from crash investigations to cold-case murder probes, Trent said.

Currently, camera-equipped vans nab speeders in construction zones, but state law does not allow speed cameras on interstates, Trent said.

In Arizona, 50 speed cameras will be deployed on highways by September with another 50 by January at a cost of about $20 million. The state hopes to raise $90 million a year by imposing $165 fines on vehicles going 10 mph over the speed limit or faster."...

The bastards aren't even denying that the purpose of the speed cameras is not safety but revenue enhancement. A good reason to avoid Illinois at all costs. The jerk Governor Blagojevich that introduced this idiocy flies back and forth every day from Chicago to Springfield in a private jet because he doesn't want to live in the Governor's mansion. Same as Arnold in CA.

Is seems to me we have fomented a new Aristocracy, one that lives in total disconnect from the rest of us. Like, for instance, France in 1788...
