In the '80s we were building a Breeder Reactor which would have used the waste from other reactors. It was being built near Oak Ridge Tn in a size that would prove it a viable way to reuse waste rods - after spending $1.5B on equipment, building the nclear mat (where the containment bldg would sit). access roads, settlement ponds, then fighting the environmentalist in court, we were set to start the real construction. We also had our own concrete plant on the site and huge rock crushers to deal with the rocks we dug up so they could be used as aggregate in the concrete. We had done a lot of work - bought and delivered 95% of the major equipment and needed another $1B to complete the project.

Then the nitwits inside the beltway got involved & stopped funding. One particularily bright Senator said "we don't know what to do with all the waste material we have now, so we should not make more" Well, Duh! This reactor would have *used* all that waste to make electricity! What a moron. Another bright light in congress offered these words of intelligence "we don;t need the electricity." When in fact we only added the turbines and other equipment that would allow the production of electricity to prove the project would produce electricity and to provide income once the project was built. It would hve been dumb to build it, prove it would work in a commercial sized venture then not do any more with it. If it didn;t make electricity it would have become an expensive paper weight.

Yep, I would have dearly loved to see the US move in the direction of breeder reactors instead of the Boiling Water Reactors (BWR's) - things would be dramatically different today.

There's more stuff surrounding this issue but it;s old news and few are interested.

Have a noce Sunday -

France uses the technique of refining their waste for reuse, getting 98%
of the energy out of the fuel rods, virtually elliminating waste. Our design
skims the top 20% after which we store the rods as waste. US total waste
now amounts to the size of a football field 6 feet high and is about one
coke can per person of waste for the total lifetime of all nuke reactors.
Chernoble killed 63 people, the predicted cancers from fallout never happened.
You get more radiation from a banana than from living next to a reactor.
