That was a Mauser 'Red 9.' I Traded it for a Chi/Com AK-47 that a friend
smuggled in from Vietnam in a large Stereo that he bought in Siagon. When the
selector switch was in full-auto, it sang like a bird. Surplus 7,62x39 ammo was
4c a round back then. That went for both 8mm Mauser?and 9mm Luger too.

Out in the Mojave, it was fun when a big Jack was running away from you, to
start a few yards behind it and work your way through it. They always had such
a startled look on their faces! I've still got a picture of my 6 year-old first
son, Willi D, sitting cross-legged, behind a Jack what was almost as big as he
was, grinning from ear to ear, holding the Red-9 beside him, shoulder stock
down. The jack, looking as big as an elk in front of him, with it's?huge ears
sticking up in the air, like the elk's antlers would be. There's a 9mm hole
visible?in one ear. I guess he aimed a little high that shot. <g> ?I'll
treasure that one for the rest of my life.

One of my ex brother-in-laws, Don, had a whippet dog (small Greyhound.) We used
to take it out there to 'course' the rabbits. We'd have him on a leash, and
when he spotted one, he'd stop and freeze up, stiff as a board. But once we let
him go, if he didn't catch the rabbit within the first 100 yards, it was all
over. Those sneaky little bastards would gang up on him and play games. While
he was chasing rabbit A, rabbit B would cut across in front of him and he would
start chasing it instead. Then rabbit C would do the same thing, ad nausium
until the poor hound collapsed. Poor dog. Have they no shame?

Ach, the olde days? --? Yer pal Bubba
