Dr. Steve: I've been into automatic waeapons most of my life. My MG-34 and
MP-40 were purchased back in the early 1980s at the Great Western Gun Show in
L.A. as 'parts guns.' Complete except that the recievers were torched in half,
making them, under Federal law,?non-firing wall hangers. The '40 was $400, and
the '34 was $600. I found a class?II manufacturer in Phoenix who built
recievers for me, I paid the $200 ea. Transfer tax, and started to 'Rock & Roll
out in the Arizona desert.'

The Kubelwagen, mit stalhelm came later, with a Berretta MP 38/42 that I found
at work. This guy's son brought it back home after WW2. That SMG has two
triggers, one for semi, and one for foll auto. All he had to do to make it a
legal war trophy was to remove the full auto trigger. I paid $200 for it with
one trigger, looked in the latest issue of Shotgun News,?went to the surplus
gun parts section, where I found a replacement auto trigger, original sling,
and two 40 round mags which cost me all of $40. While I was at it, I also found
a set of original y-straps, leather belt, and 2 canvas mag pouches w/the
loading tool for the MP-40.

But that was then ... and this is now.? Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba

Willi:

?

I'm not sure how it went back then, but the half-tracks are now, for some
reason, classified as implements of war and cannot be imported without a lot of
red tape from the State Department's Munitions Control Office, an Importer's
License from BATF&E, etc. I understand that the best anyone can do now is get
the tracks imported from Israel but I'm even ready to accept an "assembled from
parts" one. The only thing I can't tolerate is one in poor mechanical
condition. If something is going to be broken I'm going to be the one that
breaks it. I'm not sure how they classify the Kubelwagen buy I'm guessing it
can be imported without too much trouble as Pinzgauer's and Unimogs make it in.
It must be something about tracked vehicles

?

I'll probably put the front and rear ARB Air Lockers on my Bronco as a backup
for the G-wagon but that is about it. Four 4x4's should be enough for anyone.

?

And today is one of those no ambition, just want to wander on the mountains in
SE AZ and look for Ghost Towns or some such. It is a really good day here to
take out the 348 and exercise it but even that doesn't seem like motivation
enough, though I?know some time in Nov. I'll remember today and wonder why I
didn't take it out for a run.

?

Too bad we didn't run into each other sooner. We could have torn up some really
remote sites vic. Ft. H.

Hey Dr. Steve: Before I bought my Type 181 Kubelwagen in the late 1990's, I
explored other kinds of European military vehiclesThere were several German Sd.
Kfz. 251 - Halftrack personnel carriers, FOB the Czech Republic, for less than
15K usd, if I remember right. The Germans had factories there that manufactured
several tens of thousands units during WW2. After the war, the Czechs continued
production for several years, thus spare parts are no problem.

After weighing the pros and cons, I decided on the Kubelwagen, FOB Houston. It
was really a no-brainer. Since 'The Thing' was a civilian rip-off of the
Kubelwagen, all the spare parts that I could ever need was available at my
nearest VW dealer, and it cost half as much as the Halftrack, I headed for
houston and drove it back to Tucson.

It was complete except for the mount for my MG-34 and the duck-boards for the
floors, and the oval Waffen-SS license plate for the front bumper, all
purchased off eBay. It had a good field-green top which I hardly used. I
prefered wearing an oakleaf?camo zeltban and a stalhelm. You should have see
those jack-rabbits run!

NOTE: the easy way to identify a genuine Kubelwagen, not a Thing that is of
much less value, is to look at the VIN. The genuine K-wagen is made in
Wolfsburg, Germany. All VW Things were manufactured in either Brazil or Mexico.
BTW, does anybody know what Wolfsburg was named pre-1945? Doug, you should know
this.

Ach, the memories, Haupsturmfuher Bubba

Actually, I have to admit that my G-wagon is one of my favorite cars, and
the most capable 4x4 I have owned.

My trailer queen off-roadster goal is a HalfTrack, and I've been on the
prowl for a usable one for a price that doesn't make it a museum piece for a
while and it is "on-order" with one of the real aficionados of the military
vehicle restoration in town but the price is the current barrier (as is the
case
sometimes with these things). There is a limit that can be spent on something
that needs a gooseneck trailer with my F-350 and while fun to drive on the
farm is essentially useless except for the trails so I'll just wait out the
market and if it comes available at the right price I'll pick it up and bring
it

home.

In the meantime I'll just see how far I can push the G, and save the 348 for
Memphis.

Maybe while we are in MEM we can all get together and figure out how to find
some obscure battlefield or historic location that no one else gets to
without a GPS and some off-road equipment.
