Hi Paul,
Bought the Porter Cable from Lowes for $399 - put it in the van and took it home - only extra cost was tax. 3.5hp motor, 15 g tank, 120V -

Did the strartup as they suggested - put the button on Auto and let it run for 15 min with the tank air drain opened. Then closed the drain and it pumped up to 175#s ppretty quickly. Quieter than my old Campbell Haulsfield which gave good service for ~ 15 years. I hope this one lasts as long -

Thx for the info about the 2 stage compressor -
;-)

Take Care,
Larry T

- what does the 2 Stage thingie do for you?

There are two pumps like your heart...a pre-stage
which takes air to intermediate pressure and
secondary which boosts it to final psi. Means greater
volume of air at a sustained high pressure. Worth having.

Re brand recognition - times have changed. Old days
the brand, whether SnapOn or PorterCable, would have
tight control over the design and manufacture on out-sourced
goods like a compressor...now days they contract with a
company for the design rights and may change manufacturer
after a year or two...bottom line is a looser relationship resulting
in less control over the product. I.e. a product can go foul for a
year before it gets corrected.

Porter sounds like a wise choice...what price delivered?
