Hey Larry: When Lancia dropped out of GP racing in 1955, they gave the Old Man
all their cars and spares. The Lancia design at the time was called the D-50,
and had two outrigger fuel tanks. At the time the D-50 was much more successful
than the Ferrari Super Squallo. After Alberto Ascari, the Lancia driver was
killed in a Ferrari sports car at Monza in a meaningless accident,?plus Lancia
was in financial trouble, it was decided to just quit racing.

The Lancia D-50s were handed over to Ferrari, and the Old Man just put
cavallinos?on them and called them Lancia- Ferraris. They raced that way until
1958, when Ferrari came out with it's new 246 Dino?in which Mike Hawthorn won
the WDC. THe car was a real man killer, because both Luigi Musso and Peter
Collins were killed in them. Musso at Reims and Collins at the old 'Ring.

After winning the driver's crown, Hawthorn wanted his car, but the Old Man said
no, and had it destroyed instead.

Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba

Hey Bubba,?
Really rubbing elbows with some big name dudes! ;-)?
?
re the Sharknose Ferrari and P Hill - the 2007 IIRC Goodwood did a segment on
this Ferrari - Hill was there and I believe he thought the repro was better
than the original - tighter steering and more exact shift linkage - he was
impressed with the effort!?
?
I wonder if Enzo ever regretted destroying all those old Ferrari's? I always
liked the one that had the huge fuel tanks hung between the wheels - I think
there was a Lancia with a similar design - circa late 50's/?
?
Anyway thanks for sharing that interesting story - even if you could not reveal
that mystery man's name -- I guess I should be able to figure out who it was
from the clues but I have never followed wealthy people's actions very closely.
;-)?
?
Take Care,?
