Adam sez "I'd like to ask for advice and call upon the collective wisdom (yes, that means some of you shouldn't reply ... you know who you are ... : )

Is it I, Lord? (with apologies to Mathew)

That said, Adam, ya didn't say how you are going to purchase - nor what "coast" you and your wife will coarse - BUT "if you are a California resident and acquire a new car, truck or motorcycle from another state, it must be certified to meet California smog laws in order to be registered here." (from there web site) There is also some gobbledygook about 49 state cars with less than 7,500 miles NEVER getting registered unless - - - . Read up on the trips and traps. Tho I believe you can skip this if you are making a purchase through a dealer.

You mentioned factory delivery. Great time can be had. Factory tour. Lunch at the Cavallino Restaurante across the way - be sure to buy some dinner service, and wine goblets (I don't think the flat ware is for sale). They didn't ship when I was there in 99. Oh, yeah, and The museum.

Stripes - hmmmmm, I have seen these check and craze. Tho it was on a Stradale.

Color? Pastels are in - - - - today. According to Ken Okumura, Enzo designer, Silver makes a car look thin - Red makes the same car look wide. Personal taste dictate wheel treatment, but Freeman Thomas, father of the Audi TT and new Beatle, told me he hates chrome wheels (I think within reason) The eye goes there like a trout hitting a lure and never gets to the lines of the car - the beauty of the thing.

Coupe vs Spider. As far as resale? When the top goes down, the price goes up. Just lite women. Ergo, the coupe is rare model 'cause they can sell more Spiders. Although I have had cars with the "Targa" roof or sun roofs, what ever, they remained closed up usually - unless it was an over cast day. I don't want any more doctors carving on my epidermis - for my health's sake.

Stick or F1? I have driven the F1 and I am not too good with it. Its faster than I am. Having driven stick since mid 60's and raced Porsche's, I am used to my slower timing and real double clutching and heal and toeing. Therefore I did not enjoy the F1 tho perhaps with a few months of constant driving ? heh heh, I could. Besides, if the oil pump goes out, its an $8,000 tab - and I think that's only for the pump. Nope - give me the 'clink-clink' of the shift and ubiquitous Ferrari gate - ayep. Love it.

What else? Oh yes - model year. Most likely it will be an '09 - but you can tell by the 10th VIN digit. Um, it should be a "9."

If you are in the process of ordering car to your tastes and they haven't determined a VIN yet - it really is a thrill to finally see the VIN - the day when your car is really born.

That's it, enjoy yourself - get something you like and damn the torpedoes - your cars value will sink like a rock, but who cares - every used car I have ever bought had a hidden story somewhere - after all, buying a used car is buying someone else's problem - be it too many cars, tired of it, or in deep trouble somewhere. A new car - now that's YOUR story.
