You asked <<what's the process for identifying the sources?>>

The donation request/submittal form has a place where it says <<The government requires us to attempt to cllect the following information. Name, Address, Employer and Occupation>>

But it's up to the politician to accept the money with or without ther blanks filled in. And who's to say the info provided is actually correct. Seems like the fox watching the chicken coup.

I did mail a check on my business account once and it was returned. But I expect if people wanted to make illegal donations there's little to stop them save someone on the inside offended by the cheating who reports the wrongdoing.

That's why Campaign Finance reform seldom does anything - the legislation has no teeth. If someone were put in jail a year for every illegal dollar donated we'd see funding slow waaaay down. I doubt the donors would like to hear the politicians views on how they stop that evil funding.

This is depressing.

I don't see any evidence of Obama raising half a billion (from whom?)
and why wouldn't the McCain campaign be all over it?

Looking at the FEC site, it seems like Obama has a total of $400M and
with many donations above $2000, there's no obvious "foreign" --
what's the process for identifying the sources?
