Re: Are Ferraris Losing Their Good Looks?

Following a tip from Larry, I had a chance to pick-up a hardback copy of Doug
Nye's book "Dino, The Little Ferrari".....an excellet book filled with many
great photos of Formula 1/Formula 2 cars, as well as the 206SP, 246 variants,
and a few shots of 308 GT/4s - these cars in original Euro trim look much
better, IMHO, than the US-spec treatments.

Funny how people's tastes change over the years - there were quite a few voices
on this forum and others who compared the 456 to a Ford Probe on steroids (I am
still one of them), but actually prefer the design compared to the 612.  The
550/575 variants still remind me of the Toyota Supra ricer that has, literally,
been squashed flat.  And Clyde's famous quip that the 360 looks like a
'platypus' I still remember.....I understand the reasoning that most new cars
today have designs reflective of necessary aerodynamics advances (Ferrari's new
full-sized wind tunnel came on-line in the late 1990s?), but the day I heard
the Enzo was designed by a Japanese guy instead of an Italian, I knew Maranello
was in serious trouble....Enzo would NOT have approved!

I'll put in my ditto's - the last group of really attractive
Ferrari's are
the 360, 550
& 456 - it was all downhill after that but.go back to the 60s, 70s &
80s &
they were all hot chicks -

I'll bet a very high percentage of people who bought Ferrari's made
during
those 3 decades parked it in the garage that 1st night, and spent hours
listening to music and watching their beauty radiate in the new
surroundings.

Are Ferraris Losing Their Good Looks?
By Richard Chang

Gavin Green of Car magazine in Britain raised an issue I’ve thought about
quite a bit lately: that Ferraris “aren’t gorgeous anymore.”
Mr. Green took issue with the fat rear end of the new California model, but
didn’t stop there. “The 612 is fussy and ill-proportioned,” he said.
“The
Enzo is more bug than bird. Even the F430 lacks the visual grace and profile
poetry of the old F355, the last lovely Ferrari.”
Mr. Green points to its recent Formula One drivers, Michael Schumacher and
Kimi Raikkonen, both staid individuals, and asks: Has Ferrari lost that
innate Italian coolness?
More likely, it has to do with aerodynamics. And Mr. Green recounts a recent
conversation with Luca di Montezemolo, president of Ferrari. “He said the
styling was dictated by aerodynamics and the need to keep a Ferrari glued to
the road at 180-plus,” Mr. Green writes. “That’s why the Enzo is all
wedge
and scoops and slats and chunky lines. That big fat rump of the California —
more bustle bum than bikini bottom — helps aero performance, or so Luca
says.”
It hasn’t helped that a whole slew of beautiful vintage Ferraris were on the
auction block this year, including Steve McQueen’s 1963 250 GT/L Berlinetta
Lusso and this 1961 250 California Spyder once owned by James Coburn:They
don’t design them like the 1961 Ferrari 250 California Spyder anymore.
