That is exactly the case with '80s era BMW check controls.  If you use cheap 
WalMart (or less) bulbs, the current load is often different than those 
specified for correct lamps, and as are honored by quality product 
manufacturers.  Also, lamps with bare brass bases corrode and cause resistive 
connections thereby lowering the current load, which is what check control 
tests.  

When I go through my Mondial's lighting I will replace all lamps with Sylvania 
brand and will use the correct numbers as specified in the manual.
