I think that the dash warning light to let you know that your headlights  are 
on was only a British invention for their Lucas headlights.  After  all, how 
dim would the headlights have to be to not let you know that they are  on?  
Only the Brits have 3 positions on their headlight switches:   "Off", "Dim" and 
"Flicker".
