Hi Britt. Here's an alternative to the dam idea -- Death Valley National
Park: the lowest, driest, hottest place in the Western Hemisphere (134+ °F /
57+ °C in the summer). If you like geology, vast landscapes, and ever wanted
to go, this is the time. I've just returned from a week of tooling around
there in a 4x4 with my lady (I live 300 miles away on the coast of San
Diego). 

You have little time, but there are routes you could take to say you've been
there. As example:

The routes go through a place called Indian Village. Even this area is
REMOTE, that location has a nice place to stay called the Furnace Creek Inn
and Ranch Resort. There are a few other places to stay as well. 

Now, if you had a high clearance 2X SUV, and an extra day to spend, there is
a place north in the valley called The Racetrack Playa. It?s an ancient dry
lake bed where large boulders (some up to 700 lbs) mysteriously move about.
Apparently it?s the only place this is known to happen in the world. No one
has ever seen them move, and scientists do not fully understand how it
happens. We had to rough it 35 miles to get there, but it was worth it ? the
place is absolutely surreal. I?m going to go back to camp there in the
spring during a full moon.

Ferrari content: this is the kind of route where you could easily explore
your top speed ... and hold it there for a while.

Sorry for the NFC but I need some quick advice for a last minute trip to CA
over the Xmas holidays. I want to go from Palm Springs to Las Vegas with an
overnight in between. This is more of a scenic driving tour as I haven't
seen this part of the states from the ground before.
 
Advice? I want to see a little of the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dan from
the ground. I only have 48 hours so if I leave Palm Springs in the morning
and need to be in Vegas the next day by mid-afternoon what route would you
suggest?  Where is a big enough town to overnight in (close to Canyon and or
Dam) for the  first night where I can find a simple Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn
or similar?
 
Appreciate it if anyone can take the time to drop me a line. Just want to
see some desert but have to stay on schedule so rather than drive straight
through I thought I would build in an overnight stop. I see the interstate
on  the map but there must be a better way?
