Bubba recalls "The only thing that I've seen similar (and was lucky enough to flog around Irwindale Raceway, was Mickey Thompson's 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel steering Olds Toronado at a Press freeload). Doug, you were there, right?"

Ahhhh, yesh - one of the many great times Willi. Yeah, Gary Congdon was to drive this thing - a Chevy powered 3 valve stock block - eat THAT Gurney and Ford. Unfortunately, Congdon was killed in a sprint race - in those days, the mid 1960's, you didnt just crash - you died. Yee Ha.

About that same time didn't we go to Riverside for the press day unveiling the Rex Mays Race to be held that December? First time USAC cars were to go on a road course - well, since the olden days of F1 when Indy was one of the F1 races. They tried running the road course counter clock-wise - no go. Even after opening up turn one to be a kinder and gentler turn - cars just wanted to spin out all over the track. Ergo - they ran USAC, another first, clock wise. Gurney ruled.

Hall's 'sucker car' was at Riverside. I'll never forget watching it navigate the 'esses' as if it was on railroad tracks. The only thing that I've seen similar (and was lucky enough to flog around Irwindale Raceway, was Mickey Thompson's 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel steering Olds Toronado at a Press freeload). Doug, you were there, right?

Indy? Der Frau always stayed at this Bed & Breakfast behind the Speedway Motel, just off 16th St. that was run by a member of the 'Indy Old Timers' Club. Quiet (except for that damned cannon going off every morning at 6am!), clean, and only $85 a night. We could walk to the track in 10 minutes. We did that the 1st year, but discovered that if you had a handicapped sign on your rental car, you could park in the museum parking lot for FREE! It was a 5 minute walk to our seats in Grandstand10. How could you beat that?

The F1 race at Ontario was the 'Quester Grand Prix' held in 1971. I'm looking at my 'All Access' Press Pass, even as I type. The Press Buffet was OUTSTANDING! I loved the chilled lobster, clams, the oysters on the half shell, and the prime rib carving station were hard to beat.

I wonder how the 'Great Unwashed' and the other heathens enjoyed their hotdogs and $5 beer down in the cheap seats ? Since Moet was a sponser of the race, that's what we had up in the 'Press Only Luxury Suite.' Beer seemd so, ... so... ordinary!

That's the year that I talked my son Willi and I onto the Goodyear Blimp for a ride20over the track during practice. I got a shot of Pedro Rodriguez, driving his Yardley BRM, his hands in a full opposite lock, while I was shooting straight down into the cockpit from the blimp.

The Blimp Pilot was so impressed with my line of bullshit, that he let Sonny and I drive the blimp for a while! I've still got my 'Official Goodyear Blimp Pilots' License and wallet ID Card.

Hey cLyDe . . . Eat yer heart out & 'check 6!' <g>

Las Vegas was like Indy we missed only 1 year and that was because it was July 4th weekend (grandkids love my fireworks display) I digress we stay at Anderson instead of Indy $150 for the weekend. Las Vegas had a 3 nignt min.

I remember Hall's 'sucker' car but can't remember if it was at Riverside or Ontario.

I thnk the first big race at Ontario was the F1 vs Indy cars, in the first 10 there was 7 F1 if I remember right.

I remember once at Willow Springs I had my crew docs and my 500mm f5 mirror and worked my through cornor workers and ended up where I could fill the frame with flag man giving Sam Pontier

the checkers as he won the race (now I can't be sure if it was Willow) Sam was who I was pit crew for.

At Stardust, didn't spectators get Hall clear, I seem to remember it wasn't course workers.

Stephen: Yea, GTS Doug and were there too, with working press passes of course. Hall ran into and flew over Lother Mochembacker (sp?) driving his Lola T-70 when Lother snapped a rear axle and stopped on the track like he hit a brick wall. Once upside down, Jim's large rear wing acted as a lift wing. He got so high in the air that I was going to give him a pair of Pilots Wings, but, ever the gentleman, Doug said it would be in poor taste, so no.

I think that Doug and I got to the scene just as they were lifting Hall out of what was left of his car. Jim's legs were folded up to his waist in front from the knees. I remember that his then wife, Sandy was there too and got into the ambulance with him.

Back in those days we were SO poor that Doug and I had to share one room with only one bed in it. As you can imagine, it got pretty cro wded in the middle of the night. Especially since we had our dates in the bed with us! <g>

Thank God that my Uncle Wilber didn't
come along that trip with his pet goat/fiance, Billi. Now that would have been a real circus. And speaking of circus' - my date Judy could do more tricks in a double bed than a tribe of monkeys could do on a 20 foot clothesline! Doug can back me up on that one. <g> No, really!

Oh, the hardships we had to go thru to see a Can-Am race! The Stardust Hotel was too cheap to spring for comp rooms, even for us poor, hardworking 'newsies', and we ended up in some sleazy Motel 3 1/2, just off the Strip! How low can those slimy 'Vegas corksoakers go?

The comp beer at the Press Tent was even domestic, not imported, like a Laguna Seca. And the free seafood buffet didn't even have any oysters on the half shell. Boy, I sure could have used a dozen or so when we got back to that one motel bed that night!

Ach, the memories, yer pal Ferrari Bubba

I was in Las Vegas at the Stardust GP when Jim Hall had his big crash, just as a spectator. Had my kids with me and we ended up sleeping in the car as any rooms that were available were out of my budget. Not going to LBGPs is one of my biggest regrets.

I am sure we must have crossed paths, those were days when you could not only see but talk to the drivers.

Riverside, Ontario, Willow Springs? I had working press/pit access passes to all those venues from the late '50s til most closed their doors. we must have crossed paths dozens of times. How about the LBGP or Las Vegas?

That gives a whole new meaning to 'blood red'!

I got to California Dec 66 and worked as a machinest at Pacific Pumps till I got 3 hernias in one year. A neighbor of mine had a 356 Porsche and I doubled as his pit crew and photographer (in 71 I won the Silver medal in the color division of the Nikon International Contest) , I became a freelance photographer (emphasis on free) and used my crew access at Riverside, Ontario and Willow Springs. B4 moving back to KS and taking up data processing.
