1998. I've delayed updating because the A8 still looks fresh and it accomplishes its dual missions of getting through New England winters with aplomb and making the weekly warm season 280 mile round trip from Sherborn to PTown on 10 gals of fuel. FWIW, beginning in 2000 Audi added fat and shortened the final drive ratio. I recently considered a new S8 for European delivery but was put off by Audi's unwillingness to fit it with the current A8 final drive ratio. It would have made a great high performance cruiser. A8 - I've put about 150K miles on mine. Be prepared for belt service at 95K miles and a few "unscheduled" maintenance issues. It's unstopable in the snow and ice and it will never rust.
