I apologize for asking after multiple members have answered the questions of others, but I wasn't really interested in changing or upgrading my DirectTV subscription at the time.
Steve, Just go to your local warehouse store and you will find a "leased" HD DirecTV DVR for a few hundred bucks. The monthly fee for a DVR is all of $5. You pay a montly fee to SOMEONE for the guide data. Tivo USED to offer a "lifetime" subscription - AFAIK they no longer do. The cool thing about the DirecTV HD DVR's is that if you have a gigabit home network, and a compatible PC or two - you can actually watch recorded (but NOT live!) programs on your PC via a networked application.
